It’s not even a big deal.
Frankly, Derek doesn’t understand what Laura’s problems is when she’s the one who used to tease him so much about his compulsive gym rat routine.
He hasn’t even put on that much weight, really he’s just lost some definition. In the stomach area. He’s still fit, still healthy, lugging around boxes for the bookstore and chasing after his cousins makes sure of that. He’s just stopped going to the gym. And jogging. And maybe he’s been comfort eating but it’s allowed, all things considered.
He’s had a rapid fire string of god awful relationships. Just as soon as he’d feel okay about his ex cheating on him or leaving town and telling everyone but him, or stealing his car and setting it on fire, he’d wind up getting into another awful relationship.
There’s nothing wrong with him taking a break and recollecting himself.
"Seriously, again?" Laura asks on her way out Friday.
"What?" Derek demands, but he already knows.
"It’s Friday night and you’re, yet again, wasting your youth by sitting on the couch, watching Animal Planet, and eating Chunky Monkey in your sweatpants."
"It’s Phish Food," Derek corrects lamely, looking down at his pint.
